Help Me Take

Verse 1

Help me take my next step,

Help me take my next step

I am on a path of coals

that burns against my flesh and bones

Chorus 1

I’d love Love to be my shoes when I’m walking

I'd love Love to be my tongue when I’m talking

I'd love Love to be the ground that I dance on

I’d love Love to be the sound of my life’s song

Verse 2

Help me take my next breath, Help me take my next breath

I am choking on the smoke

From the fire burning up my hope

(Chorus 1)

(Instrumental break / humming)

Outro Chorus

I’d love Love to be my feet when I’m dancing

I’d love Love to be my lungs when I’m laughing

I’d love Love to be the sky I am under

I’d love Love to be the whisper of wonder

Amen

Centering prayer:

Help me be present, aware, and grounded in love and gratitude as I interact with others, and especially as I interact with myself.

About:

Sometimes grief, struggle, or suffering can bring you to such a place that all you can see is your very next step, if that. Or, making it to your next breath is even an accomplishment.

For some, asking for divine guidance can seem like an avoidance of decision making. I like to think of it as a reminder to the self that the steps/actions we take, even our own pacing of breath, is a choice:

to step in love, or to step with bitterness.

to speak with love, rather than division and judgement.

to stand on the foundation of love and gratitude, rather than the unstable ground of resentment.

This song reminds me of a time when my future was hanging on a thread, that I had no control over. It is a prayer to be present, and conscious of our attitudes, each step we take, each breath we take.
