=ibrium: The Art of Equilibrium
Dave Riffel’s exhibit =ibrium invites visitors to explore the transformative practice of achieving balance through a series of interactive installations and large-format photographs that highlight the delicate moments of aligning and achieving equilibrium: a metaphorical and physical journey toward finding one's axis, akin to the spiritual connection between earth and sky, a contemporary echo of Jacob's Ladder. This exhibition invites visitors not just to observe moments of balance but to engage actively in the pursuit of equilibrium—the dynamic state of centering oneself amidst the external chaos of the world.
In the context of centering prayer, contemplative practices, and mindfulness, equilibrium refers to the harmony between stillness and movement, inner calm and external forces. Here's a deeper exploration of how equilibrium connects to these spiritual and meditative practices:
Deep Inner Stillness: In centering prayer and other contemplative practices, equilibrium is achieved through profound stillness, where mental activity quiets, and emotional turbulence fades. This state is not merely the absence of action but a deep, intentional harmony, where the self finds peace amidst the noise of everyday life.
Spiritual Equilibrium: Equilibrium, in these contexts, embodies spiritual balance—a state where practitioners align their inner selves with core beliefs or a divine presence. This equilibrium is fluid, not a static condition, allowing spiritual peace to integrate with the challenges of everyday life, fostering inner harmony despite external fluctuations.
Mindful Presence: In mindfulness, equilibrium can be described as a state of complete presence and awareness, where one is fully anchored in the now, free from judgment or distraction. It’s a clear, calm focus where the mind rests in the present, rather than being pulled by the past or future, allowing for a deep connection to the current moment.
Unity and Connection: In mystical traditions, equilibrium can represent the point of connection between the divine and the self. It’s the moment when individuality dissolves into a broader awareness, merging with the divine essence or the universe. This state of being 'at one' with a higher power or source is the ultimate realization of equilibrium, where inner balance meets the vastness of existence.

About the artist:
David Riffel – Artist Bio
David’s work is inspired by his practice of balancing rocks to find alignment and centering practices rooted in Christian mysticism. His exhibit invites viewers to explore stillness and grounding at the Earth’s level, offering a peaceful space during a time of national polarization as we approach a divisive presidential election. David believes in fighting for the middle, finding the center, and using art as a means to foster overlap, agreement, and balance, even in the face of disagreement or tragedy.
As part of the immersive gallery experience, David is bringing his original music, creating soundscapes to complement the visual pieces. The show is sponsored by his family and friends and coordinated by his wife and bandmate, Danusia "Beatz."
David Riffel has been a tenant at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center (NACC) since October 2013, and this exhibit, "Equilibrium," marks his first art showcase at The NACC, celebrating his 11th year as a tenant. As a music producer at the NACC, a filmmaker, and educator (media communications) at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, David is passionate about helping the next generation of media makers find their voice.
